Local aerodrome regulations

Initial climb in EPKT is 6000 ft and the value is published on the charts. Information about it does not have to be issued with departure clearance, but it is highly recommended, especially for newbie pilots.

Katowice TWR controller does not require clearance from APP Kraków for takeoff permission (the “departure release” is not required).

In addition to clearances issued via radio, ATS has an option to issue ATC clearance via Dalatink Departure Clearance (DCL). Departure Clearance Request (RCD) should be initiated:

  • no earlier than 30 minutes prior to EOBT or CTOT (if CTOT is assigned),
  • no later than 5 minutes prior to EOBT or CTOT (if CTOT is assigned).

After initiating the datalink process, cews shall continously monitor frequency given in ATIS in the data exchange process in case of any changes.

ATC clearance can be issued by ATC via radio even after initiating the Departure Clearance Request (RCD) via datalink.

Ground movement procedures

Departing aircraft are advised to be directed to TWY H (using TWY A, TWY B, TWY D) to increase traffic capacity on the aprons and taxiway TWY E.

Runway RWY 26 is equipped with a rapid-exit taxiway (TWY N), which should be used as the default exit taxiway for arriving traffic on this runway.

The designated standard taxi route is: TWY L, H2, N, B, E3, E2, E1, E0, T.

Aircraft DE-ICING

De-icing is conducted on Apron 2 (stands 70-72), or, if this apron is unavailable, de-icing may be carried out at stands 9-15. It is prohibited to de-ice aircraft in the immediate vicinity of the terminal buildings and hangars located south of the terminal.

VFR traffic

VFR traffic during transit through CTR Katowice or performing aerodrome circuits should fly at a constant transit altitude of 2000 ft.

During periods of high air traffic intensity, an aircraft operating under VFR may, if necessary, be instructed to hold according to the appropriate procedure over the following points:

  • point NOVEMBER – holding on the north side of NOVEMBER.
  • point X-RAY – holding on the south side of X-RAY.

At EPKT radar service is provided for airborne traffic. Traffic is controlled according to PANS-ATM 4444 Chapter 8.

Low Visibility Procedures (LVP)

LVP operations will be commenced when any of the RVR falls below 550 m and/or the cloud ceiling falls below 200 ft.

Pilots are informed about LVP being in operation via ATIS or by radio, with use of following phraseology: “Low visibility procedures in operation. CAT II in operation”.

If weather conditions does not allow CAT II approaches the following phraseology should be used instead: “Low visibility procedures in operation. CAT II not available”.

LVP will be terminated when all of the RVR increase over 600 m and the cloud ceiling reaches 200 ft or more and a continuing improvement is anticipated.

LVP< 550 m< 200 ft (60m)

During LVP for departure and landing only runway 26 should be used. Runway 08 can be used for departure on pilot request. After landing runway should be vacated via taxiway N and reported to ATC.

Minimum RVR for departure is 125 m.
